Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know the dances ahead of time?

NO.  All dances are taught right there as we do them. However, if you are new to the dance, you should try to be there for the start of the event, as figures that are taught early in the progression will likely be repeated without further instruction.

Do I need to have a partner?

NO.  Singles are welcome, and so are couples, families, and groups of friends.

Do I need dancing shoes?

NO.  Comfortable, soft soled shoes are recommended because they will be easy on your feet and easy on our floors.  We do request that you not wear your street shoes — please bring dry, clean shoes to change into for dancing.

Are there lessons for beginners?

Check the event listings. Typically a Beginners lesson is held 15 minutes before the published start time for the dance.

For example, Watermill dances start at 8PM, on a typical night doors open at 7:30 and the Caller is ready to do a lesson at 7:45

Are refreshments available?

YES – because we bring them to share with each other. Please consider bringing an item to share at our refreshment table. There is also water to keep you hydrated and dancing

I’ve never heard of contradancing before, is it done anywhere else?

YES. Although LITMA has the only regular schedule of contradances on Long Island, if you get hooked, you can find dances almost anyplace else you go.  Check out Ted Crane’s Dance Database for listings of dances throughout the country
