The next LITMA Contradance will be on SUNDAY, March 19th at 2:00 PM
Basic instruction at 1:45 PM
at the Smithtown Brush Barn

We have two special callers calling for us on March 19th. Sue Gola & Dylan Simpson are up and coming callers from New Jersey.  They should provide us with a really fun afternoon of dancing.

The band for the dance will be Dance All Night, featuring Maria Fairchild (banjo), Mary Nagin (fiddle), and Max Rowland (Banjo & Concertina). Maria has been playing for LITMA contradances since the early days at the Neighborhood House in Setauket. In Portland, Oregon, she was in Cat’s Cradle with Sue Songer, author of The Portland Collection, the “bible” of contradance tunes. She has also led banjo workshops for the Long Island Bluegrass Festival and the New England NOMAD Folk Festival. Mary is one of the founding members of Dance All Night. She provides a lively melody that keeps folks moving on the dance floor. Max is the youngest member of the group, but is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, able to provide both rhythm and melody as needed. All three are also members of the Irish Band Fiddler’s Green.

Chart Guthrie will be calling the dance this coming Sunday.  Chart is really excited to be calling with a new local band: Blarney Possum

Blarney Possum plays dance music from the crossroads of Appalachia and Ireland. Maria Fairchild (banjo), Adam Becherer (fiddle), and John Morris (guitar) met at the Eastern Long Island Old Time Jam, and they also participate in the Grafton Street Open Irish Sessions, co-founded by John.

Maria has been playing for LITMA contradances since the early days at the Neighborhood House in Setauket. In Portland, Oregon, she was in Cat’s Cradle with Sue Songer, author of The Portland Collection, the “bible” of contradance tunes. She also plays with Dance All Night and Fiddlers Green and has led banjo workshops for the Long Island Bluegrass Festival and the New England NOMAD Folk Festival.

Adam has been playing old time and Irish fiddle on and off for the past 30 years. He was exposed to bluegrass and old-time music at an early age while watching his father’s band compete at bluegrass festivals at South Street Seaport in New York City in the 1970’s. He currently plays with Buddy Merriam and Back Roads. His fiddle style has been influenced by Martin Hayes, Kevin Burke, Bruce Molsky, and others.

John has been playing traditional music in Suffolk County for the last fifteen years.  He began by accompanying Irish dance tunes with the Bob Morris Irish Band.  In 2019, he co-founded the Grafton Street Open Irish Session group which hosts Irish traditional music sessions at locations around Suffolk County several times a month.

First Post!

This post marks the start of a new WordPress based LITMA website.

The old website was ‘static’ with only a single point of contact for adding or changing content. The new site allows for Editors, Authors and other user categories, with each user having their own login credentials.

Needless to say, the starter web site needs a lot of work to make it useful – hopefully many hands will result in light work
