Contra dance music is lively and propelling, serving the purpose of driving and energizing dancers as they move up and down a dance floor in simple, called patterns, interacting with a partner, another couple, or another individual along the way. Contradance (also contradance, contra-dance and other variant spellings) is a folk dance made up of long lines of couples. It has mixed origins from English country dance, Scottish country dance, and French dance styles in the 17th century.
The Long Island Traditional Music Association holds Contradances at 2:00 PM (1:45 for beginners) on the third Sunday of each month (September-June) at the Smithtown Historical Society Brush Barn, 211 Main Street, Smithtown, NY.
Admission is $10 for LITMA Members and $15 for the general public. Students are half price and children under 16 are free with a paid adult.
All dances are taught, and beginners are always welcome. There will be a short basic instruction session starting at 1:45 PM. Contradancing is a lively traditional dance form like square dancing. It is easy to learn and fun for all ages. While you do dance with a partner, there is no need to come with a partner because anyone can ask anyone to dance.
